COMMUNITY ADVISORY
(Recent Off-Campus Incidents near the University)
Recently, there have been three nearby incidents involving University community members - a robbery and a larceny adjacent to the Medical Center, and one attempted robbery along the river path off University property.
A student was the victim of the larceny at about 5:00 p.m. on May 9, 2013, on Mt. Hope Ave. She was approached by a male suspect who grabbed her arms and took her cell phone and keys. The suspect then ran northeast on Mt. Hope Ave.
A student was the victim of the attempted robbery at about 10:00 p.m. on May 10, 2013, on the river path behind the Staybridge Hotel. He was approached by three male youths who demanded his bicycle. He refused and was struck in the face by one of the youths. The three then ran from the area.
A staff member was the victim of the robbery and assault at about 3:30 p.m. on May 12, 2013, in the Castleman Rd. and Elmerston St. area. She was approached from behind by a male suspect and after a brief struggle was struck in the face and had her wallet and cell phone taken. The suspect then fled toward Mt. Hope Ave.
Rochester Police are investigating these incidents and increasing patrols in the area.
Remaining alert to your surroundings at all times is the best defense against being victimized. Please report any suspicious person or circumstance to the Rochester Police at 9-1-1 or University Security at 585-275-3333.
Safety Tips to Remember:
- STAY AWARE of your surroundings. Keeping alert is your best defense.
- LET IT GO! Property can be replaced, but you are one of a kind.
- DO NOT ARGUE with a suspect or force a confrontation.
- STAY CALM and observe everything that is taking place.
- MAKE NOTE of a suspect's direction and means of travel; do not chase or follow!
- HAVE A PLAN! Rehearse in you mind what you might do if you were to find yourself in threatening situations - think about alternatives you can use.
- AS SOON AS IT IS SAFE TO DO SO, call Security from the nearest Blue Light Emergency Phone or dial x13 if on campus. If off campus, call the police by dialing 9-1-1 (Every minute counts!)
