Riverview Apartments FAQ
Students at the University have a new housing option beginning with the
2008-2009 academic year. A new housing community, Riverview Apartments, has
been completed in the City of Rochester across the Genesee River from the River
Campus. The five building, 120-unit complex is located at 1236 South Plymouth
Avenue near Barton Street. While owned and maintained by Somerset Properties,
an independent property manager, the apartments are only available to University
students. Addressed below are some common questions about University Security's
role at Riverview Apartments.
Q) Does University Security patrol the Riverview apartment complex?
A) Security officers will be on duty at Riverview 24 hours a
day, seven days a week. In addition, a security supervisor has been assigned
exclusively for the Riverview/Brooks Landing area.
Q) Does University Security have office space at Riverview?
A) Security's office is in Building E, Room 103. There is also limited
office space in Building B, Room 105A.
Q) How does a resident contact University Security?
A) The quickest and most efficient way to contact Security is by
telephone; dial (585) 275-3333, or pick the nearest Blue Light Emergency Phone.
AT&T or Verizon cellular telephone subscribers can also reach Security by
dialing #413 (a free call). Telephones provided in Riverview apartments can
be used to dial 911, the City of Rochester emergency number, but are not part of
the University telephone system.
Q) Are there Blue Light Emergency Phones at Riverview?
A) Blue Light Emergency Phones have been installed between the River
Campus and Riverview. They are located
along the pedestrian path on South Plymouth Avenue, and at exterior points
within the apartment complex.
Q) Are there surveillance cameras at Riverview?
A) CCTV cameras have been installed along the pedestrian route between
the River Campus and Riverview. Cameras are also located on exterior points at
Riverview Apartments, providing surveillance of parking areas and pedestrian
pathways.
Q) Are the apartment buildings at Riverview locked?
A) All the buildings are locked at all times. Each apartment building is
equipped with card access, the same as all residence halls. Occupants swipe
their UR ID card to enter their building. Individual apartments are equipped
with electronic locks that use a second access card.
Q) What number should residents call in an emergency?
A) Call 911, the City of Rochester emergency number. Each apartment is
equipped with a telephone that can be used to dial 911. If you use a cell
phone, call 911. Telephones provided in Riverview Apartments are not a part
of the University system. (Expanded service for the apartment telephone is
available from Frontier Communications, (800) 921-8101.)
Q) What transportation services are provided for Riverview residents?
A) A University shuttle bus will operate from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. on
weekdays, directly between Riverview and Rush Rhees Library. The Gold line
shuttle operates evenings on weekdays and weekends, and includes a stop at
Riverview. The Gold line schedule may be viewed at
http://www.rochester.edu/parking/shuttle.htm. When shuttles are not in regular
service students can request transportation from the on duty Parking and
Transportation Services vehicle by calling Security at (585) 275-3333.
Q) Are personal safety escorts available?
A) Personal safety escorts are available at any time. We will choose the
most efficient way to provide an escort based on our activity levels at the
time. We acknowledge emergencies and other high priority non-emergency calls
for service first. To request an escort, call (585) 275-3333 or pick up a Blue
Light Emergency Phone.
Q) How does a resident obtain a replacement for a lost apartment key?
A) Replacement keys are obtained through the Towers/Riverview Area Office of
Residential Life. The office is located in 110 Anderson Tower. It may be
reached by calling (585) 276-4682. In addition to notifying Residential Life, we
recommend that lost keys and/or ID cards be reported to Security.
Q) What office do residents call for maintenance issues and repairs at Riverview?
A) Riverview Apartments are managed and maintained by Somerset
Properties. A Somerset Properties employee is on duty at Riverview weekdays
during regular business hours. Maintenance problems should be reported to the on
site office by calling (585) 235-2161. After hours (evenings, nights, weekends,
holidays), call (585) 474-1792.
Q) Who do residents call if they are locked out of a building or an apartment?
A) There are five Residential Life Community Assistants (CA's) and a Graduate
Head Resident living at Riverview. If residents are unable to reach one of
them, they may contact Security to request access.
Living safely...
On campus:
Living safely in the residence halls requires paying attention
to some important points:
- Keep your doors and lower level windows locked when you are
gone, even if you only leave for a few minutes.
- Have your keys ready as you approach your residence.
- If someone knocks, find out who it is before you answer.
- Draw the shades after dark.
- Don't leave any valuables in places where they may be visible
from the outside of your residence.
- Don't advertise your absence with a note.
- Don't attach your name or address to your keys.
- If your keys or ID card are lost or stolen, contact Residential
Life right away to prevent misuse. After hours, call Security
at x5-3333.
- Sleep with your bedroom door closed and locked. It affords
additional security and safety in case of a fire.
- Lock your exterior doors.
- Report defective locks, card readers, or burnt-out lights
to the Facilities Customer Service Center, x3-4567.
Off campus:
Living off campus requires special safety attention:
- Make sure the locks in your residence have been changed since
the previous residents moved out.
- Have a viewfinder installed in your front door. Make sure
to ask all uniformed persons or repair people for identification.
- Leave spare keys with a trusted neighbor; never leave them
hidden outside your residence.
- List only your first initial and last name on a mailbox and
in the telephone directory.
- Answering messages should not indicate that you are single,
not home or on vacation.
- Leave some lights on when you go out or set some lights on
a timer to make it appear someone is at home.
- If you're gone for an extended period of time, have a trusted
neighbor pick up your mail and keep an eye on your residence.
- If your keys are lost or stolen, change your locks right
away.
